Doris McKinney Jones, 93, of Whitsett, N.C., died on Tuesday, May 3, 2016.
She was born in Mulberry, Fla., on Sept. 30, 1922, the daughter of Earl R. McKinney and Jeanette Hilker McKinney.
She was raised and educated in Southern Illinois. In 1940, she graduated from Harrisburg Township High School. Following graduation she enrolled at the University of Illinois in the School of Music. In 1944, she received a Bachelor of Music in Piano and Voice. She was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, an honorary music fraternity for women, and became a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, a scholastic honorary music fraternity for seniors in the School of Music.
She continued postgraduate studies in Music Education at the University of Illinois. From 1947 to 1948, she was a Teacher Assistant in voice at the School of Music at the University. She was a charter member of the Urbana Sigma Alpha Iota Alumni Chapter.
In 1948, at Wesley Foundation in Urbana, she married Charles E. Jones, a law student at the University of Illinois. After his graduation from law school in 1950, they moved to McLeansboro, where Charles began his law practice; and later became a judge for the county, circuit and appellate courts.
Doris taught Elementary Music for one year at Springerton Grade School. Following that year, she taught private piano and voice at her home in McLeansboro. For 35 years, she was Choir Director and substitute Organist at McLeansboro United Methodist Church, where she and Charles were members. While in McLeansboro, she became a member of Chapter 0 of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
After 52 years in McLeansboro, they retired and in 2002 returned to Urbana and moved into Clark Lindsay Retirement Village. She moved to Whitsett, N.C., in 2014, after Charles passed away.
There will be a service to celebrate her life at a later date.
Survivors include her son, Paul Burt Jones and his wife Chely Montalvan Jones of New York; granddaughter, Caroline Roxanne Jones of New York; and her daughter, Sarah Winifred Olenick and her husband Robert Francis Olenick of Whitsett.
