Dennis's Story

Dennis Lewis, 89, of Danville, passed away at 7 a.m. Monday, February 5, 2018.
Dennis was born in Douglas County on August 23, 1928, the son of Elmer and Nellie (Wright) Lewis.
Dennis is survived by his daughter Tamara Russell; two grandchildren, Blake Walker, Brooke Walker; two great-grandchildren, Kaela Walker, Cameron Walker; and brother, George Lewis.
Dennis is preceded in death by his parents; ex-wife Katie Lewis; and four brothers and sisters.
Dennis spent his early years in the Muncie, Ill., area. He was a graduate of Oakwood High School, Class of 1946. He then earned a bachelor's degree from Western Illinois University and later received his master's degree from Indiana University.
Dennis was a basketball coach for 38 years and began his career in Fremont, Ohio, and later began coaching in Indiana as well as Illinois before returning to his alma mater to coach for Oakwood High School, where his 1963 basketball team was Vermilion County Champions. He retired from Danville High School in 1987 after 23 years of service.
Dennis was the author of the book "From Snakepits to Fieldhouses." He was also a veteran of the United States Air Force.
A Celebration of Life Service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 8, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3940 N. Vermilion, Danville. Burial will be in Stearns Cemetery in Fithian. Military rites will be performed by American Legion Post 210. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
