Dale's Story

Dale E. McDonald, 81, a resident McLeansboro, died 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, at his home. He was retired from the Air Force. Mr. McDonald was born July 29, 1933, in Thackeray, Ill., the son of Clarence H. and Blanche M. (Sloan) McDonald. He married Glenda K. Harre on Aug. 25, 1956 in McLeansboro and she preceded him in death on Feb. 8, 1994. He married Marilyn Elaine (Bristline) Gorkowski on Oct. 21, 1994 in Albuquerque, New Mexico and she survives. Mr. McDonald was a Lieutenant Colonel in the U. S. Air Force, having retired in 1977 with 22 years of service. He was awarded the Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross Medal. Dale loved to play pool with Air Force buddies, loved gardening, watching Cardinal ball games, an avid University of Arizona basketball fan and loved to sit and watch animals in their backyard. He attended The First Baptist Church in McLeansboro. Survivors include his wife Marilyn McDonald of McLeansboro, three sons: Richard Dale and wife, Diane, McDonald of Tucson, Ariz., Robert Eugene McDonald of Phoenix, Ariz. and Scott Glen McDonald and fiance, Josie of Chandler, Ariz., two stepsons: Brad and wife, Cyndee, Gorkowski of Tucson, Ariz. and Bruce and wife, Karen, Gorkowski of Cheyenne, Wyo., two stepdaughters: Karilyn and husband, Wayne, Kipple of Oak Ridge, Tenn. and Karen and husband Ed, Delissio of Middletown, Del., two brothers-in-law: Larry and wife, Pat, of Runnells, Iowa, and Forest and wife, Sharon, Gorkowski of Toledo, Ohio., three sisters-in-law:Ardelys Newton of Osage, Iowa and Joyce and husband John Lowery of Gulf Breeze Fla. and Phyllis Mayberry of Mt. Vernon; seven grandchildren, 10 step grandchildren; and 10 plus one on-the-way great-grandchildren. Services for Dale E. McDonald will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014 at the Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro with the Rev. Robert Sefried officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 106, McLeansboro. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. till 12 noon Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014 at the Harre Funeral Home, McLeansboro. Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital and Hospice of the Good Samaritan of Mt. Vernon, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Kay, mother and father-in-law Charles and Maxine Harre, sister-in-law, Freddie Lou (Harre) Hartman, step-grandson, Ryan Silsby, and brother-in-law Frank D. Mayberry. Arrangements are under the direction of Harre Funeral Home, McLeansboro.
