Spud Kincade was born to Lawrence Kincade and Monzell (England) Kincade on December 29, 1922 on the banks of the Wabash River at the foot of the Old Brownstreet Bridge in West Lafayette, IN. His father was attending Purdue University at that time.
In 1924 the family moved to the small hamlet of Hedrick, Warren County, IN. Spud started to school in Hedrick in September of 1929. In March 1930 the family moved to a farm southwest of Hedrick where they remained until Spud graduated Grade School. There were only two students in Spud's 8th Grade Class and he graduated number one. All eight grades were taught in the one room school house which had no running water and the toilets were outside. Spud entered high school in West Lebanon, Warren County, IN in August 1937 and he graduated in April 1941.
Spud and Barb dated throughout high school. When they married there were two other couples in their class who married. Spud and Barbara (Watkins) Kincade were married on October 17, 1943 at Barb's parent's home. The war was on at the time and almost everything was rationed. Their honeymoon was spent in beautiful downtown Spencer, IN in Mrs. Crowe's boarding house. The house is now a retirement home for World War II veterans.
This union produced two children, Raymond of Edmond, OK and Louann, who is deceased. Raymond spent over 22 years in U.S. Army Military Intelligence and retired in October 1990. He is now an independent insurance adjuster and private investigator.
Spud retired on February 25, 1995 after working as an auto parts salesman for 46 years, six months and one day. He began working as a salesman on August 23, 1948 in Danville, IL where he spent 13 years with E.B. Collins Company. He then spent 23 years as a salesman and zone manager of six stores in Indianapolis, two in Terra Haute, one in Greensburg and three in Evansville, IN.
