Clarence J. “Books” Kaufman, 85, of McLeansboro, died 10:36 a.m. Thursday, April 14, 2016, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro. He was born Aug. 8, 1930, in Piopolis, the son of Emil and Caroline Rubenacker Kaufman. He married Ottilee Mitchell; she survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Randy Lee Kaufman and Joseph Ray Kaufman, both of McLeansboro; a daughter, Dixie Norris and husband Thomas of Lexington, Ky.; five grandchildren, Katherine Lee (Steve) Siereveld, Ann Elizabeth (Jason) Pattan, James Joseph Norris, Katie Beth Kaufman and Nathan Lee Kaufman; and four great-grandchildren, Megan Elizabeth Siereveld, Ryan Matthew Siereveld, Alexander Tommy Pattan and Jonathan Norris. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Alvin and Clyde Kaufman; and a sister-in-law, Georgianna Kaufman. He was retired as owner of Kaufman’s Package store. He also worked for the State of Illinois Department of Agriculture and owned and bred thoroughbred horses. He was a charter member of BPOE 1882 and the Eagles Lodge in McLeansboro. Funeral services were held Monday, April 18, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with the Rev. Ron Nelson officiating. Burial was at Hopewell Cemetery near McLeansboro. Visitation was held Sunday, April 19, at the funeral home. For those who wish, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or to the Elks Crippled Children’s Fund and will be accepted at the funeral home. Gholson Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
