Betty's Story

Betty Jean McKinzie, 82, of Woodlawn, Illinois passed away at 1:12 A.M. April 5, 2017 at her residence in Woodlawn, Illinois. She was born October 2, 1934 in Centralia, Illinois to parents, Harry and Bertha (Knipping) Butler. Betty married Kenneth McKinzie on September 10, 1954 at Faith United Methodist Church in Centralia, Illinois. They were blessed with 62 wonderful years of marriage.

A Funeral Service will be held Friday, April 7. 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Baptist Church of Woodlawn in Woodlawn, Illinois with Minister Tanner Green and Pastor Don Verhines officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois.

A Visitation will be held Thursday, April 6, 2017 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church of Woodlawn in Woodlawn, Illinois.

Betty is survived by her husband, Ken McKinzie of Woodlawn, Illinois; children, James McKinzie and wife, Lee Ann of Woodlawn, Illinois, Pamela Green and husband, Mike of Woodlawn, Illinois, and Nancy Verhines and husband, Pastor Don of Woodlawn, Illinois; grandchildren, Tanner Green and wife, Bethany of Warwick, Rhode Island, Brock Green and wife, Jamie of Collinsville, Illinois, Jase Green and wife, Morganne of Newark, Illinois, Bronson Verhines of Fairview Heights, Illinois, Dawson Verhines of Woodlawn, Illinois, Kinzie Verhines and fiancè, Gage Harding of Springfield, Illinois, Gena Capps and husband, Ethan of Woodlawn, Illinois, and Bria McKinzie and fiancè, Fran Campos of Woodlawn, Illinois; great-grandchildren, Addi Green, Hudson Green, Charlotte Green, Carson Verhines, Parker Ainscough, and Zelma Ainscough; special nieces and nephews, including Mike Ainscough and wife, Cathy, Steve Ainscough and wife, Marla, Nancy Ellen Knight and husband, David, and Mark Ainscough; and great-nieces and nephews, Erin Rowe and husband, Mik of Texas, Paul Ainscough of Taylorville, Illinois, Ty Ainscough and wife, Jessica of Chicago, Illinois, Drew Ainscough of Texas, Morgan Knight of Indiana, Madison Knight of Indiana, and Alex Knight of Indiana.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Bertha Butler; grandson, Brett McKinzie; great-granddaughter, Elowynne Green; and siblings, Lela Mae, Catherine, Esther, Frieda, and Lloyd.

Betty was a teacher for many years. She mostly taught 4th grade, starting at Johannisburg Grade School in Venedy, Illinois from 1971-1973 and then North Wamac School in Centralia, Illinois from 1973-1993. Betty was inducted into the Jefferson County Senior Saint Hall of Fame in 2007. She was very active in the Woodlawn community. She had a special relationship with Christ and dedicated her time to serving her church at First Baptist Church of Woodlawn. Betty spent her life taking care of others. Her family was most important to her. Betty was especially proud of her children and grandchildren. She touched many lives and was dearly loved. Betty will be missed by all who knew her.
