Bertie's Story

Bertie Irene Ham, 101, of Mount Vernon, passed away at 9:40 PM, February 7, 2017 at her residence in Mount Vernon. She was born June 29, 1915 in Wayne County, Illinois to Hettie and Samuel Mateer. In 1940, she married Curt D. Ham who preceded her in death in 1985. She was also preceded in death by her grandson, Justin Aycock, her brother, Coyn Mateer, and sister, Virgene Richardson.
Bertie was an active member of the First Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher for over 60 years. She was a member of the Hazel Morris Circle there.
She was an elementary teacher in the Mount Vernon City Schools and the Jefferson County area schools. After retiring, she continued to substitute teach and tutor until she was 93. Bertie was known by many for her love of cooking. Her cookbook, Treasured Recipes, is still enjoyed by many and was chosen by the Rend Lake Arts and Crafts Center to be sold there as a representative of Southern Illinois cooking.
She will be remembered by the many lives that she touched on her life's journey as a loving family member and dear friend. She is survived by her son, John Ham and his wife, Barbara Blacklock of Carbondale, Illinois; two daughters, Judy Andrews and her husband, Dr. Craig Andrews of Loudon, Tennessee and Janice Aycock and her husband, Robert Aycock of Dallas, Texas. She was blessed with four granddaughters, Amy Sell, Emily Morgan, Elizabeth and Alaina Ham; and five grandsons, Andrew Aycock, Ryan Andrews, Scott Andrews, Chris Andrews, and Dr. Jason Andrews. She will also be missed by her 11 great grandchildren.
A very special thank you to her friend, Loretta Taylor, who lived with her the last years of her life and the many friends and relatives that made it possible for her to enjoy her home.
Bertie's family will receive friends at Newell Funeral Home in Mount Vernon from 10:30 A.M. until service time, 12:30 P.M. Saturday, February 18, 2017.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12:30 P.M. Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Newell Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Dr. Stan Morrison officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon.
