Bernice's Story

Bernice E. Zedalis, 87, of Opdyke, Illinois passed away at 7:23 A.M. April 17, 2017 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri. She was born May 1, 1929 in Opdyke, Illinois to parents, George R. and Blanche (Stonemetz) Garrison. She married Martin "Jeep" Zedalis, Jr. on May 13, 1950 in Osceola, Arkansas and he preceded her in death on April 24, 2009.
A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, April 20, 2017 at Opdyke Cemetery in Opdyke, Illinois with Reverend Wendell Garrison and Reverend Travis Hayes officiating. Interment will follow at Opdyke Cemetery in Opdyke, Illinois.
A Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
Bernice is survived by her daughter, Rynda Mason and husband, Robert of Opdyke, Illinois; son, Jan "Z Man" Zedalis of Opdyke, Illinois; grandchildren, Steve Zedalis and wife, Nikki of Opdyke, Illinois, J.B. Howell and wife, Michelle of Louisville, Kentucky, Justin Whipps and wife, Allison of Dix, Illinois, Hannah Linville and husband, Josh of Nashville, Illinois, Lauren Zedalis and fiancé, Alec Gerdes of Peoria, Illinois, Weston Mason and friend, Amanda of Monroe, Louisiana; great grandchildren, Morgahn, Olivia, Thaddeus, and Melaina Zedalis all of Opdyke, Illinois, Trey Whipps of Bonnie, Illinois, and great grandbaby Linville expected in September; daughter-in-law, Fran Zedalis of Mount Vernon, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.
Her parents; husband; one son, Dennis M. Zedalis; one brother, Robert Garrison; one sister, Myrna Cummings; and daughters-in-law, Patty Brown and Lisa Earls preceded her in death.
Bernice worked at the Mount Vernon Stove Foundry, and later as a School Bus Driver for Opdyke schools. She was proud to be the longest resident farmer of Opdyke, Illinois. Alongside her husband, Jeep, she was the #1 fan of Opdyke-Belle Rive Sports. She loved her church family at Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church, and the love of God was first and foremost in her life. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
