Frank D. Mayberry, loving husband, father and grandfather, 80, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, at St. Louis University Hospital, St. Louis, Mo. He was born March 12, 1934, in McLeansboro the son of Alvin and Helen (Sanicki) Mayberry. Frank married Phyllis Ann Harre on July 20, 1957, at St. Clement's Catholic Church in McLeansboro. He attended St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon. Frank graduated from McLeansboro Township High School May 29, 1952, and went on to graduate from Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering on June 17, 1956. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish and was noted for his ability to fix anything and everything; inventing ingenious solutions to common problems. He will be sadly missed by many as he never met a stranger. Frank was commissioned a second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force on November 6, 1956; became a jet fighter pilot and later served in Vietnam. Retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel on December 1, 1980, he and his wife Phyllis returned to Mt. Vernon, IL to reside after moving 21 times in 24 years while in the Air Force. During his career he received numerous service commendations including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters and Air Force Commendation Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Mayberry of Mt. Vernon, two sons: Bradley Mayberry and spouse Hilda of Vienna,Va. and Brent Mayberry and spouse Mary, of San Antonio, Texas; one daughter, Kathryn Williams and spouse James of Lusby, Md., grandchildren: Ashley, Brent Jr., Jamie, Sarah, Janele, Jonathon, Lanay and Rachel, ten great-grandchildren, two brothers: Joseph and Edward Mayberry of McLeansboro, his beloved dog Mariah and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. Funeral will be 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 19, 2014, at St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Father John Iffert will officiate the Mass with Military Rites to be accorded following Mass. An interment of ashes will be conducted at a later date. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters: Dorothy Dill and Delores Lee. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1550 Main St., Mt. Vernon, IL. 62864. Harre Funeral Home of McLeansboro is in charge of all of the arrangements.
